Our featured author this week is Paul Ferguson who last year published his debut crime thriller ‘Killing the Dead’. Kate Cousins caught up with him recently to find out a little more …
So Paul, tell me about ‘Killing the Dead’
It is a fast paced crime thriller about Joe Tubbs, a failed actor and scriptwriter, who desires the Hollywood dream but is rejected and ridiculed by the industry he loves. When his latest script is ignored he decides to bring it to life, and within days he’s savouring the panic and fear he has brought to the streets of L.A. With bodies piling up and no leads, Detective Dan Scott is running out of ideas, but would a theory put together by small town investigative journalist, Leigh Turner, help catch this ingenious killer?
What sort of audience have you intended the book for?
The book is definitely intended for those who like to read fast moving thrillers. It’s got a few enthralling twists, a unique story line and will hopefully appeal to all ages and genders from teenagers to grandmothers.
Where did you get your inspiration for the book?
The idea for this book has been in my head since about 2005. I was running my own business then so it was difficult to find quality creative time. Once I sold the business I began writing every day. I don’t want to give anything away, but the story line came when I read an article about Gary Gilmore, a convicted murderer who was executed in Utah. I began to think; what if my killer found another person named Gary Gilmore and killed him in a similar way to his namesake in Utah? And from there the idea grew!
What would you say your ideal writing style is?
I prefer to write from a third person point of view. Pace is the key as I don’t want the reader to put the book down.
How did you come across 2QT?
I spoke to a few publishers before 2QT, but wasn’t impressed. Some said it would takes months possibly a year before they’d even look at my manuscript, while others were not very transparent and just seemed to want my money. Catherine at 2QT immediately put me in touch with three of her published authors, which was very helpful as I learned a lot about the company and their standards.
Do you have any advice for those looking to write?
If you are thinking about writing a book, be yourself. If you try to be something you are not, it will show. Also, write about something you feel strongly about and not what you think is in fashion or will sell. It has to come from within. Often writers say to me, “I have an idea,” and I always say, “put it down on paper”.
And finally, what’s next?!
I am currently writing my second crime thriller, only this one is based in the UK. I have also started work on a horror graphic novel using short film scripts I’ve written over the years.
