West Over the Waves, The final flight of Elsie Mackay – Jayne Baldwin

9781912014699Author: Jayne Baldwin
Release Date: 13th February 2017
Format:
Paperback and also available as Ebook
ISBN:
978-1-912014-69-9

Glamorous heiress Elsie Mackay could have lived her life in the social whirl of high society, partying with princes and dancing with dukes. Instead this wilful young woman was determined to pursue her dreams – eloping with a dashing soldier, starring on the silver screen, and designing the luxurious interiors of ocean liners. But her greatest passion was for aviation, still in its infancy in the 1920s, and her burning ambition was to become the first woman to not only fly the Atlantic but to cross those unforgiving waves by the most challenging route – east to west – against the prevailing winds. Not only were the odds stacked against her but she knew her father, the shipping tycoon Lord Inchcape, would do everything in his considerable power to stop her.

Journalist Jayne Baldwin uncovers the forgotten story of the bold and beautiful woman who blazed a trail across newspaper headlines, high society and who loved the heady mix of speed and danger that marked the early days of aviation.

This Way More Adventure: A Journey of Self-Education in Africa – Janet Stuart

9781910077887_cover_front

Author: Janet Stuart
Release Date: 1st August 2016
Format:
Paperback (406 pages)
ISBN:
978-1-910077-88-7

In 1974 two recently-married thirty-somethings decide to take a late gap year to explore Africa…
After sailing to Lagos by cargo ship, they travel around Nigeria, Tanzania, Lesotho and South Africa. Using public transport and staying with local families, they strive to understand the countries they explore and to learn more about the political, educational and socio-economic changes that are sweeping the continent.
Janet and Patrick Stuart’s journey is a snapshot of Africa in the mid-1970s. They travel fearlessly from the heights of Kilimanjaro to the depths of the shanty towns, from meetings with Steve Biko to ujamaa villages and moving interracial church services. Along the way they observe with great sensitivity, compassion and wry humour the effects of change on diverse communities in the world’s second largest continent.

This is a very readable memoir of a bygone time. The book is populated by the real characters that lived the experience of decolonisation. Anyone who was travelling through these countries at that time will sense the authenticity and feel a resonance of the text with the sounds, scents and rhythms of the different countries and cultures. But it also maps some of the events and the personalities that shaped the evolution of development and contributed to the social history of the times.
Professor Keith Lewin. BSc; MSc; DPhil; FAcSS, C.Phys; Emeritus Professor of International Development Centre for International Education, University of Sussex

A tale based loosely in reality, this story traces the fortunes of the Ingles family in the West Riding coal fields around Wakefield. Theirs is a saga that could be replicated time after time in an area where scratching a living wasn’t easy, and where coal, drink, and occasional infidelity played integral parts in the life of the community. Their story starts in the mid-1940s and paints a picture of the privations endured, the dramas enacted, and the joys and sorrows shared, in a town where all understood how hard it was to break free from the shackles of a traditional coal mining community constraints Potentially fifth generation coal hewers, William and Jack Ingles did just that, but at what cost to them and to their close family? This is the first volume.

‘Fat is our Friend’ will change the way you think about what you eat Confused by the nutrition messages coming from governments and health bodies? Confused by the ever-changing advice from our daily newspapers? Join Sammy Pepys in his quest to discover what’s really going on and what you can do to eat more healthily… and lose weight. In that order. Back in 2012, Sammy Pepys just wanted to help his overweight sister-in-law, Katy, avoid a tummy tuck (bariatric surgery), knowing that all previous attempts at dieting had failed. So he developed a plan showing how best to go about things, which she then put into practice. It worked. And it was the first successful diet Katy had ever completed, achieving a 20 kilo weight loss and much-improved blood sugar levels along the way. Having an inquisitive mind, Sammy spent much of the next three years finding out just why Katy’s dietary approach had been so successful and why more people are not eating this way. He learned that: • We’ve effectively been brainwashed into thinking fats and oils are bad for us. • Healthy fats such as butter, lard, coconut and olive oil facilitate the essential metabolic functions our bodies perform subconsciously day and night. • An excess of sugar, refined flour, synthetic additives and those less-desirable vegetable seed oils – aka junk food – is progressively damaging our bodies. Katy’s summary? ‘Eat more real food, drop starches and sugar, and learn to love full-fat dairy products like cheeses and butter again to lose weight without feeling hungry. I feel energized.’
